Sunday-What good are ye?

siloHappy Sunday? Maybe. Thanks to Ms. McGee for a special shoutout and page on her website here. I’m looking forward to showing more work at ArtWalk this month in downtown Jacksonville. Let’s hope for no rain or apparent-rain this time!

In other news, I have lots of new work hiding here and there. I’ve plunged one such into this post haphazardly. These past few weeks can be best remembered as lacking sleep-mouth-gape-at-women-forgetting-i-have-netflix. I’ve started a small addiction to tumblr as well, unfortunately I can only hold onto so many addictions. This one, however, is super fun. Get an account, be silly with me.

Collaboration: Part II

haiku3Okay. So, I’ve been a little grumpy and complain-y lately, but I’m going to use this space to gush for just a moment.  First, I want to thank you, Taco Bell. Your “beefy 5-layer nachos” are amazing. As a starving artist, I’ve found something I can live off of for $0.79 a meal. I wish this was sarcasm, but it’s not. No <sarcasm> here. These are honestly amazing. Maybe it’s because I didn’t eat for a good 12 hours before I had these nachos, but wow! I digress. Onto more important things.

Lia (check out her site here) collaborated with me tonight on a photo shoot. The hair and makeup were – as you can imagine by looking at her portfolio – impeccable. But, what blew me away, was her attention to detail. She put forward great suggestions on clothing, lighting, and even posing. She created a warm, comfortable atmosphere on set. After the shoot, I basically thought “I need a Lia at every shoot.” She’s not paying me to say this, I swear. Truly a great experience. Whatever comes out of it wouldn’t have been possible without her. When the work develops (pun intended) I’ll certainly post information here.  Thank you, Lia!

The third very special thanks for today goes out to Portia-pie. I won’t even try to use my words to explain how much you mean to me. Your support and passion extends into much of my life, and I sincerely thank you for that. I wouldn’t be at this happy place right now without you. Call it kismet, fate, or random good luck, you’re amazing. No more words on it, because they aren’t close enough. Thanks.

Collaboration with rejcel of rejcel.com

rejcelNot that it hasn’t been on my mind before, but not until after seeing Justin of Rule29 Creative speak at a local AIGA event did I start assuaging the collaborative beast in me. What I really mean here transcends collaboration and moves more into the spectrum of sharing ideas voraciously…without an ownership flinch if someone else uses one of mine.

So, I’m deviating from my standard deviation, and have asked rejcel (as seen in this on this wonderful site) to be part of an artist-meets-artist collaboration. Rejcel (who assembled her first lawnmower at age 2), is an artist that I respect in Jacksonville. Not to knock Jacksonville (again), but I’m over your infant-steps towards modernism, caught somewhere between a bead and a necklace. I have many really wonderful friends that are amazingly talented, however. I’m happy and enthusiastic to see what rejcel and I can create in her first time out from behind the camera.

In other news, remind me to start writing these in stream-of-consciousness as opposed to whatever pseudo-reality thing I’m up to now.

“…a college town with a musical sound” – Maria Taylor

Fingertip Test Epic Fail By Morgan of Whispertown 2000

Fingertip Test Epic Fail By Morgan of Whispertown 2000

I headed to Gainesville to catch Maria Taylor and Whispertown 2000. (Note: Morgan from Whispertown 2000 doesn’t have man-hands, I’m just a lazy illustrator) I might as well go ahead and preface this: I love Maria Taylor. I think I even blogged before that her music has accompanied me on every long trip I’ve ever taken, and been the soundtrack to a relationship’s end. Basically, she could crawl out on stage and whimper remnants of her songs and I would certainly think it was the best thing in the universe. Notwithstanding, the live experience was interesting as a contrast between the last few shows I’ve seen. Nico Vega and Von Iva both have very extroverted, commanding, strong woman vocalists. They jump in the audience and take control. Maria is much more laid back, with a “cool” aesthetic. It’s interesting because that sort of “quiet artsy calm” exudes itself and gives a really good vibe to the room. It’s personal, but in a different kind of way. Obviously I enjoyed the show quite a bit. iPhone pics :

Guest Post: Kastoory from Pomp and Circumstance

In my undergrad literature class, Novels : Now and Then, our teacher asked us to come up with motives for writing. We slowly started calling out the more noble reasons for the novelists pursuit, such as : to impart knowledge, to explain an experience, to tell a story… etc. When our teacher tired of our naivete she started writing on the board other motives for writing novels, such as: revenge, to get laid, to invoke pity/love/hate/lust/sadness, to put food on the table.. etc.

Looking back, I realize we forgot the most basic reason why people write, or act, or paint or draw or photograph or do design shit, or art shit, or sport shit or any shit for that matter. It’s because we want to, it’s because to not do so would be absolutely, fucking unbearable. Read the rest of this entry »

It feels like Thursday

New York, 2008
Originally uploaded by just john.

I don’t know what that means. People say It feels like Thursday on a Monday. I say it feels like beer and disillusioned youth. Regardless. I got a nice comment on this photo I shot in New York. It’s hard to mess up a view from the Brooklyn Bridge, let’s be frank! I mean, when there is beauty all around you, you have to be horrible not to see it. This does happen to be my favourite shot from the bridge. it’s the least touristy one; but, more importantly, it reminds me of the pieces I miss most about New York. I’ll keep those pieces to myself, but trust me, they’re juicy!

In other news:
I set up for ArtWalk today. It went really well and I’m as pleased as I can be with anything. The curse of pseudo-perfectionism.

In my ongoing fascination with bathroom etiquette, I noticed today at work, a gentleman following another one in. They were chatting. Well, it’s a tiny bathroom, and one of them didn’t need to use the facilities–he was just there to finish the thought. It made me uncomfortable as well as the other gentleman. Please! The conversation stops at the door OR pretend to pee! Get a clue.

Is it the real Steve Buscemi? I don’t know, but he’s damn hilarious.

In Other News…It’s Wednesday

Maria Taylor is coming to town!
I was at a show around 2006 to see Apollo Sunshine. That show pried my eyes open with some amazing music that is resilient and entrancing to this day. Christina Wagner played at that show. The ex and I were blown away, I mean absolutely. If you haven’t heard her, go here. Or if you’re in Jacksonville or Orlando, don’t be lame, go check her out live! There was a band in between to be unremembered, then Apollo Sunshine, and then we had to leave before the headliner…Maria TaylorRead the rest of this entry »
